STRIPEY has a most interesting condition. The more we work with shelter cats, the more we learn about diseases and conditions. If nothing else, volunteering has brought great awareness to the difficulty of survival of our companion animals. Stripey is one of several cats signed over to the shelter a few months ago. It was thought that she had an injury to her mouth because when she first arrived, her upper lip on the left side was swollen and raw, with ulcers inside. A vet visit yielded the information that she suffers from “rodent ulcers,” a non-contagious virus that affects the lips but is not painful, and which can be managed many times with steroids as well as antibiotics, but also flares up for various reasons. The name rodent ulcers came about originally, according to Google, because originally it was thought cats had been bitten in the mouth or on the lips by a mouse or a rat; good to know that was not the cause! Apparently a reaction to food, or an auto immune response to something else in the environment can cause flareups. It has not affected Stripey‘s attitude, nor has it affected her ability to eat. What it does affect is appearance only. So now we are going to try to find a home for Stripey where a family will not care if she has an occasional flareup, and are willing to put up with an appearance of “fat lip” even though there’s nothing to fix it permanently. It's interesting watching her interact with the other cats in the household where she is fostered. She loves kittens! She has so much love and tolerance for the foster kittens who come to the house. However if you’re an adult cat you probably want to avoid her, because she loves to whack at the adult cats who get too close. In her defense, she does not use her claws and will just give them a slap, and most of the adult cats look at her and shrug. Because she will require some medication on occasion, we are listing her a special-needs, and asking no adoption fee for her :-). We think you would love her and her big personality to go along with her beautiful black and white body! She is spayed and FelvFIV tested, and current with vaccines.
