UPDATE #2: Here’s an update on Booker, a Rottweiler (?) mix found confused and emaciated at only 60 pounds in the Brookneal area a couple months ago. Booker suffers from a neurological issue of unknown origin. He is completely blind, has a difficult time walking in a direct line, and also has some hearing loss. Booker has been on an eat-all-you-can-eat diet in order to gain weight—and it has been working. He has bulked up nicely, and has gained 22 pounds! He has mastered housetraining, and is fine with other dogs. We hoped he would be healthy enough to be neutered this week, but his pre-surgery bloodwork resulted in a delay of surgery. It turns out that despite all we have done for him, he is anemic, has a clotting problem, and has some liver values that are not ideal. He was also positive for Lyme disease, a tickborne disorder. We are going to give him a month of medicating then retest and see how he looks. Yes foster mom has been working hard to restore his health. Update: Booker spent several days being assessed at the vet office. His severe head tilt is not improving, and the vet feels it is a neurological problem, which will require more testing and bloodwork to determine the cause or to see if anything can be done to help. The vet and the techs at the practice loved having Booker as their patient! Booker is completely without visio , but makes his way around very well. he does have some instability issues, and that is most likely due to his head tilt and issues related to it. He likes to lean against a human when he walks, and at 61 pounds this is not too bad, but he needs to gain 25 pounds and when he is larger it might be more of a problem. He is in a foster home now, where he has a grassy area with a 5 foot fence to protect him and give him boundaries to learn and to familiarize himself with. He has done OK with other dogs, and ignores cats. He has some hearing loss, but responds to his foster mom’s high-pitched whistle. The vet feels he is not a senior but his perhaps four years old, and speculate that this might be his norm, so we are anxious to see what happens with a couple months in foster care while we give him a chance to gain weight, and repeat bloodwork in a few weeks. We are not rushing to place him in a home because we want to make sure his new family will have resources and the environment necessary to care for him as needed.

Got a little heartache going on this morning. A senior stray Great Dane was found on Redbottom Road, Brookneal, just over the line from Charlotte County. He is emaciated, but his coat is clean and surprisingly luxurious for such a thin dog. he is very hungry. I would guess because of his head tilt, lack of ability to focus, but his desire to eat, that he is suffering from some thing like vestibular disease, although dehydration can cause the same type of symptoms. I am not a veterinarian, but we need to get him to one. That will be the first thing on our list for Monday morning, but in the meantime we are taking great care of him, and making sure he has many small meals during the day.
